Journey Journal #3: Institutions of Power
Purpose
Each journey journal is meant to provide you with space and an opportunity to respond to instructor question(s) using the information presented on a particular topic, reflect upon what you think about specific information and connect with your own life (i.e., experience(s) related to the content). Finally, you may pose questions that you may have about the information and concepts we cover in the module.

Considering the information and graphic on how a bill becomes a law in Texas (pgs. 232-233), what is one advantage and one disadvantage to having a legislative system where it’s very difficult to pass anything?
After examining the different ways states select their judges (e.g., partisan elections, governor appointments, etc) and listening to arguments for and against electing judges, what is one advantages and one disadvantage of the way Texas elects its judges? Do you prefer to keeping the current system or would you prefer to change the way the state selects judges? Why?
Imagine there is a proposal to eliminate the powers of plural executive in Texas and give most of the lieutenant governor’s powers to the governor. Would you support this? Think about the advantages and disadvantages of having power dispersed between the two. In the end, explain why you would or wouldn’t support this proposal?

Prompt #1: After reading, watching, and reviewing the materials regarding race & legal System in TX, select one subsection (i.e., 13th documentary, Incarceration, death row data, race & police violence, public opinion of police & policing in Texas) from it to write a reflection on. What was your main takeaway regarding the topic and what do you think about it?
After listening to the podcast “Starving the Wathdog: Who Foots the Bill When Newspapers Disappear?”Links to an external site. what are you main takeaways from the economists featured in the podcast findings? What do you think about the findings?
