Relational coordination is a dynamic process between communication and relationships for the purpose of task completion. Effective teams can coordinate efficiently through shared goals, and an exchange of information (Hustoft et al., 2018). It is crucial contemporary healthcare providers convey an understanding from a healthcare system thinking perspective that organizations require fiscal management, coordination and expansion of service lines and all products related to the business of healthcare delivery.
Functional organizational structures sort departments based on task specificity crucial to the institution’s mission. Advantages include efficiency and expertise. However, this model may result in the unintended creation of silos and challenging communication and harmonization. The Affordable Care Act, regulatory adjustments, value-based care, and technological advances serve as driving forces for healthcare organizational functional structure design modifications (Ridgely et al., 2020). The demand for improved patient experience, cost-containment and superior outcomes requires organizational integration between and across large health network divisions and settings.
Furthermore, healthcare institutions can only remain viable while meeting simultaneous goals through innovation. Cross functional teams gather the expertise of multiple sectors to problem solve and achieve objectives. Research demonstrates the precursors to effective teams include information imparting, helping behaviors and variety (Moser et al., 2018). Our urology department is a single-purpose cross functional team that encompasses operations, finance and marketing, quality and clinical. There is substantial conflict between clinical providers and marketing departments with pressure to continue service line growth to meet targets for access. However, our provider team voices concerns regarding logistics, resources, administrative supports and impacts on care quality and job satisfaction. The literature finds practitioners face moral distress in a climate of swift organizational change and cultural shifts that resemble corporatized business models, inconsistent with the tenets of holistic, sensitive, and humane care (McMillan & Perron, 2020). At this juncture, there is still no solution in sight. However, patient centered processes should remain at the core.
