Purpose: The purpose of this discussion is to practice arguing a position and to observe the elements of justified true belief in the context of a problem.
Overview: For this discussion, you will be arguing a position. Read the following background information from ProCon for an overview of the topic we will be using:
“Traditionally favored by private and [religious] institutions, school uniforms are being adopted by US public schools in increasing numbers. One in five US public schools required students to wear uniforms during the 2013-2014 school year, up from one in eight in 2003-2004. [88 (Links to an external site.)] Mandatory uniform policies in public schools are found more commonly in high-poverty areas. [46 (Links to an external site.)] Proponents say that school uniforms make schools safer for students, create a “level playing field” that reduces socioeconomic disparities, and encourage children to focus on their studies rather than their clothes. Opponents say school uniforms infringe upon students’ right to express their individuality, have no positive effect on behavior and academic achievement, and emphasize the socioeconomic disparities they are intended to disguise.”
Post: After doing some research, you will post a position (based on the first letter of your last name) on whether school uniforms are helpful or harmful to students. This post should be 200 words and include 2 sources. If your last name starts with A-K, write your post as if you support school uniforms. If your last name starts with L-Z, your post will be written as if you think school uniforms are actually not beneficial to students. You may be asked to take a position here with which you do not actually agree; be ok with that. The purpose is to explore the process of knowing, not to rehearse what you actually believe.

These sources are a part of ‘justification’, which is something we are going to be practicing this week and in the weeks to come. Your job as the writer is to help your reader understand the connection between the information you pull from your sources (evidence) to your stance (position/claim).
