White Paper
Requirements:
1300-1500 words (not counting reference page)
Rhetorically effective formatting
References to five scholarly sources (including references page)
Purpose:
A white paper is a common genre of business writing. It is a report that presents research findings in order to support a position or propose a solution to a problem. By writing a research paper in this class, you’ll be practicing writing for professional, non-academic audiences. This paper will allow you to practice synthesizing information, advocating for a position using evidence, and writing in a professional setting.
Task:
Drawing from your research, write a white paper that either supports a position or proposes a solution to a current problem. Whatever position or problem you choose to write about, it must focus on some significant concern around AI and the workplace. Your primary goal is to use this report to present some kind of claim around the topic you researched for the annotated bibliography.
Though there are no industry-wide standards for formatting white papers, they must be broken into sections, include a works cited page, and present your findings clearly. Visuals can be included, but only if they make meaningful contributions. You can find many white paper templates online, but I recommend keeping it simple and legible by following the Purdue OWL’s guidelines.
Criteria for Success:
It does need to meet the requirements and have the following:
Discernible problem/solution or specific position
Organization into sections and paragraphs
In-text references to five scholarly sources and works cited page
STRUCTURE OF WHITE PAPER
Introduction (~200 words): provide a summary of the paper, kind of like an abstract in a scholarly article
Background (~600 words): unpack the issue at hand and discuss the multiple sides of the topic you have researched
Position (~600 words): based on what you provide in the background section, lay out your solution to the problem or the position you’re taking in regards to the topic
Conclusion (~200 words): offer a memorable takeaway to your reader
References: APA style references page that includes citations for your five scholarly sources
