You need to interview someone. examples; any workers. like servers or waiters, hair stylists. any job. but you don have to interview them, just create a fictional 3 characters.
For this assignment, you will be required to conduct three interviews (via Skype, Zoom, or some other online conferencing software) with three different individuals who are currently working at three different organizations and write an essay about motivation at work. You will need to contact three employees who are currently working at an organization and set up a time to interview them. On Canvas I will provide a list of suggested
interview questions you can use, but you will have complete freedom to ask whatever questions you like. You will then
write a three-section essay that (1) describes what motivates each employee at work; (2) explains (using the theories we
discuss in class) why each employee differs (if at all) from the other two in terms of what motivates them; and (3)
explains what you would do—if hypothetically you were the manager of these three employees—to increase their work
motivation (again using theories and ideas from class). Your essay should describe how the factors that motivate these
employees align with or contradict the motivation theories and ideas from class, and how your recommendations for what
you would hypothetically do to motivate the group are grounded in the material we have discussed.
The essay should be 3 to 4 pages, single-spaced, in Times New Roman 12-point font with one-inch margins for the top,
bottom, and sides and no spaces between paragraphs. The essay will be graded on format, composition, spelling and
punctuation, as well as the content
As a reminder, I will grade your essays in terms of the following:
-Structure/format (e.g., do you have the required three sections + concluding paragraph?)
-Content (e.g., do you discuss each of the four motivation theories somewhere in the essay?)
-Writing clarity (e.g., can I understand what you’re trying to say?)
Here’s the specific grade breakdown:
100% (120/120) – correct structure, sophisticated use of all four motivation theories, clever ideas regarding how to motivate the three employees, exceptionally elegant and skillful writing–in short, performance significantly “above-and-beyond” expectations in some way (Note: it’s extremely rare to get a 100% score on this essay, just as it is with exams)
95% (114/120) – correct structure, competent use of all four motivation theories, clever ideas regarding motivating the three employees, clear writing
90% (108/120) – correct structure, competent use of most of the motivation theories, sensible (but less interesting and/or convincing) ideas about motivating the three employees, mostly clear writing
85% (102/120) – nearly correct structure, somewhat inaccurate use of the four motivation theories, less convincing ideas about motivating the three employees, mostly clear writing
80% (96/120) – partially incorrect structure, missing theories and/or inaccurate use of theories, unconvincing ideas about motivating the three employees, mostly clear writing
And then there may be grades below 80% as well…
As a reminder, make sure that you mention each of the four motivation theories from the course at least once, somewhere in the essay. Also make sure that your essay has the following structure:
-1st section: you should describe what motivates each employee at work—this should be straightforward. It should come directly out of your interviews.
-2nd section: you should briefly give your thoughts on why each employee differs (if at all) from the other two in terms of what motivates them at work. So, don’t just point out that they differ (if they do). Make sure you explain why they seem to differ.
-3rd section: you should explain what you would do, if hypothetically you were the manager of a group containing all three employees, to increase the group’s motivation on the job (this should be the largest section in your essay). In other words, this section should take up more space in the essay relative to the other sections. You should think hardest about this section and write more here than anywhere else. You can use any imagined work scenario you’d like that includes these three employees in order to explain how you’d motivate them.
-Finally, to conclude the essay, you should include a single summary paragraph that integrates what you learned about motivating employees from these interviews.
When writing the essay, I recommend using a header for each section (“Section 1,” “Section 2,” “Section 3,” “Conclusion”). That way you’ll be able to easily tell whether your 3rd section is the longest section of the essay or not.
Also, you don’t need to include a reference list at the end of the paper, unless you are citing material from a source other than the course textbook (which is not required). If you’re quoting either the textbook or another source, however, you must put the quoted phrases in quotation marks. But again, using citations and quotes is not a required part of this assignment.
